Get to Know Our Team of Consultants
Drawing on over two decades of experience, Mark Olsen provides institutional retirement plan consulting to 401(k), 403(b) and defined benefit plans. His specialties include plan governance, investment searches, investment monitoring and plan oversight serving as a lead consultant for Higher Education, Government, Energy and Manufacturing clients. As the Managing Director, Mark is responsible for the management, development and implementation of the firm’s goals and strategies. He ensures the team shares the vision of client satisfaction by personally selecting and training the staff.
Mark is recognized as a leader within the industry and speaks at national conferences including Pensions & Investments, Stable Value Investment Association, and CUPA-HR. Prior to founding PlanPILOT, Mark has held consulting positions at Mercer Investment Consulting and Willis Towers Watson. He’s had significant experience with Fortune 500 defined contribution plans from an investment and plan governance perspective.
Mark earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from DePaul University. Outside of managing the firm, he is an avid sailboat racer and participates in the annual Chicago Mac race, the longest freshwater race in the world. During the winter months, he enjoys cross country skiing.
Bill Karsten is a Senior Consultant, with over 24 years of financial industry experience, assisting financial officers and business professionals with managing and reducing risks inherent in their organizations. His key areas of expertise include plan governance, investment oversight and participant education, exclusively serving private universities and colleges. Additionally, Bill assists his clients with investment recommendations and related participant communication and education aimed at improving outcomes for their faculty and staff.
Prior to joining PlanPILOT, Bill managed the retirement plan services division for a private wealth firm based in the Chicago area. Earlier in his career, he has managed commercial banking divisions for Chicago area banks, partnering with clients to help mitigate their business and financial risks. His responsibilities included serving on several executive committees focused on managing the bank’s business and financial risks, and developing formal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with government regulations.
Bill received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Nate Cassel serves as a Senior Consultant for PlanPILOT and has been working with qualified retirement plans for over 30 years. He brings his in-depth experience and knowledge to the firm, focusing on the retirement needs of PlanPILOT’s academic clients, specifically higher education and private K-12 institutions. His key areas of expertise include plan design, investment oversight, and plan governance. In addition, Nate spearheads a number of initiatives for PlanPILOT to support our mission to be 403(b) / retirement plan thought leaders.
Before joining the PlanPILOT team, Nate began his career as an actuary and retirement plan consultant with The Wyatt Company (now Willis Towers Watson). After ten years as a consultant, Nate moved to the plan sponsor side of the business as Director of Corporate Benefits for catalog company Spiegel, Inc. During his seven years at Spiegel, he led the company in revamping and updating their defined contribution and defined benefit plans. Most recently, before joining PlanPILOT, Nate spent over ten years, creating and selling 401(k) investments at First Trust Portfolios.
Nate holds a Bachelor of Science in Math and Economics from Wheaton College. When he’s not creating better retirement plan solutions for clients, Nate is smoking protein in his back yard, or otherwise preparing a meal for friends, family, or hungry college and high school friends of his four kids.
Frank Szymanek serves as a Senior Consultant at PlanPILOT and has more than 25 years of asset management and retirement services experience. He is responsible for advising key relationships in the educational and non-profit space, focusing on fiduciary governance, plan design, employee communications, vendor oversight and investment due diligence.
Prior to joining PlanPILOT, Frank worked in various roles with The Northern Trust Company, including relationship manager, client portfolio manager/OCIO and product specialist with retirement, institutional and wealth management clients. Earlier in his career, he was responsible for retirement plan administration and benefits consulting. Additionally, Frank has consulted with senior level partners of key clients to develop and manage asset management and retirement services solutions.
Frank holds the CIMA and CFP certifications, and earned the JD and CPA designations. He earned a Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Accounting from Elmhurst College. Outside of work, Frank is engaged with transitional housing and homeless programs. He enjoys hiking, cooking and the arts.
Tim Vieth is a Consultant at PlanPILOT, bringing nearly 20 years of experience with a focus on financial planning and risk management. Tim ensures plan sponsors have the proper structure and governance in place within their retirement plans. An additional critical outcome that Tim helps clients achieve is ensuring plan participants gain the necessary education and knowledge to prepare for a successful retirement. Tim also supports PlanPILOT’s foundation and endowment solution that helps organizations take a fresh approach to reviewing and selecting outside investment fund managers.
Prior to joining PlanPILOT, Tim was an advisor for J.P. Morgan Securities. As a strong advocate for having a financial plan, Tim successfully supported clients’ goals using sound risk management practices and investment strategies. Earlier in his career, he led multiple teams while at Dun & Bradstreet, consulting with Fortune 1000 organizations driving operational efficiencies through risk management planning and best practice implementation.
Tim earned his Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and holds a Series 66 license. While away from work, he enjoys spending time with his family, long-distance running and coaching baseball. Tim is also active with the Boy Scouts of America as a volunteer, and is a board member on multiple non-profit organizations.
